Below are just a few responses from customers who installed Kuehl products
R. W. in Queensland, Australia 1988, RHD, 911 Installed Kuehl rear fender condenser, Kuehl Serpentine evaporator, Kuehl barrier hose set, high low pressure switch, Kuehl drier, Kuehl Variable Speed Fan Controller, new Denso Compressor, Kuehl Thermostat, running R134a.
“G’day Griff,
An update on my project here in Australia.
Today I had my system commissioned (vacuumed, purged & charged), which all went ahead without a hitch.
I particularly like the improvement the new fan control has made to get just the right airflow that you need.
I got it done just in time for our summer, which is starting to heat things up over here.
My mechanic said it was the coldest system he’s seen on an 80’s model 911.
Well done to you and everyone at Griffiths Technical, for excellent quality products & making it possible for the home mechanic to do a lot of the installation.
Wishing you all a Happy Christmas.Cheers
Richard “

“Appreciation for providing an involved, yet easy to follow instruction package for the installation and commissioning of “my ice project.” Your parts organization is very appreciated. Though involved the project was well worth the 20 hours install time – including my retentive cleaning. In short, my 79 911 SC now has an AC system which provides cold air. Another happy customer. As a sort of test I recently parked my black/black 911 in the Houston sun for two hours then went for a ride. Within 15 minutes I found the cabin too cold and had to turn down the fan speed. Empirical data aside I am very pleased with the system, its packaging, instructions, and operation. “
K.A. in Cinn., Ohio 1985, 911 Installed Kuehl rear fender condenser, Kuehl Serpentine evaporator, Kuehl barrier hose set, high low pressure switch, Kuehl drier, Kuehl vent, running R134a.

“Just a note to thank you for the parts & advice on my 1988 911. I’m blowing snow balls now! I assembled in spare time, when I felt like working on it. I had it professionally tested for leaks and charged. There were no leaks. On a hot, humid day (85 degrees) in Mississippi my vent temp is 36 degrees. Your instructions, parts quality and fit were excellent. You can pass along to interested parties that even a CPA, unassisted, can follow them to a successful conclusion.”

Customer:
“I have a big time problem with the system you sold me. IT IS TOO COLD! I have to turn it down. And, now I have to contend with condensate water on my garage floor. What are you going to do about this?” (open car door and make an ice skating rink). I want to let you know how happy I am with the Mr. Ice system installed in my 1988 911 Carrera coupe. This car has never had AC that worked well. I have invested hundreds of dollars in it to get some sort of acceptable cooling. All wasted. The Mr. Ice was completed ten days ago (mid August), and I am thrilled with its performance. I have not had an opportunity to use it in temperatures over mid to high 80s, yet, but at this level, it puts out more cooling than I can use, and I have to adjust the cooling to less than the maximum. There is no question it will handle mid 90 temperatures (or more) with comfortable cooling. I am seeing cool air almost immediately at startup from a hot asphalt parking lot, and within a few minutes, the temperature is quite comfortable. I can even drive with a window partially down, and still have top notch cooling inside. Tests run when I picked up the car showed vent air temperatures in the mid to high 30s on a day in the mid 80s. I am 100% satisfied and feel that you have given my car a new life. My wife and I have been taking rides these days, something that was impossible to do before, without being totally uncomfortable in the car. We now look forward to some great road trips. To anyone who reads this, I went with the entire system. I did not try to skimp and save. The only part left from my original system is the compressor clutch. I can say that the electronic speed control for the fan is great , and very helpful to adjust the fan to meet the load. The extra vent puts out cold air where it is needed. Finally, I was very fortunate to have have a highly skilled Porsche mechanic and AC technician with all the specialized necessary equipment do the entire job. This is not for the backyard mechanic. My installer had never seen one of your systems before, but had experience with other after market AC units for the 911. And he was not impressed by them From the time he opened up the boxes, he was impressed with the quality of everything you sent, and he never wavered from that. He is completely sold on Mr. Ice. To anyone who would like to take a holiday in the beautiful Appalachia Mountains, I encourage you to come to Kingsport, TN and have Greg Hamilton of Blue Ridge Motorworks do the entire job while you tour the scenic and historical area in a rental. Note: do not come on a NASCAR Cup week at Bristol, as the area is jammed full. Feel free to share this with anyone interested. I was skeptical in the beginning, and way beyond happy with the results.”
Installer: Blue Ridge Motor Works in Kingsport, TN,
” Best kit I have ever seen. It’s just 86F, we are running the evap fan at only 50% power and we got 36F at the vent”
T.C., Southlake, TX., 1988, 911 Installed Kuehl rear fender condenser, Duehl Kuehl fender condenser, Kuehl Serpentine evaporator, Kuehl barrier hose set with Kuehl pressure switch, Kuehl drier, and Kuehl Vent, running R12.
“I picked up my ’88 911 Targa today, after having it re-charged with R12, and I am very pleased. I haven’t done my own analysis on the results of my Mr. Ice Project, but the Master Technician at the service center did. With outside air temperature at 95 degrees and 47% humidity, the A/C vent temperatures were 45 degrees at idle and 38 degrees at highway speeds. Others who have completed the project did some minor tweaking and mine might require some as well. However, even before the tweaking, I am very happy with the result and I wanted you to know. Thanks for the opportunity to enjoy my car even during the hot Texas summers. ”
B.C., Orlando, FL., 1989, 911, Targa, Installed Kuehl rear fender condenser, Duehl Kuehl fender condenser, Kuehl Serpentine evaporator, Kuehl barrier hose set with Kuehl pressure switch, Kuehl drier, running R134a.
“WOW the Mr. Ice Project is WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Boy does it work! I have a 1989 911 Carrera Targa with black interior. It’s in great shape. My husband and I have searched high and low for one and finally found one is Clearwater, FL. We live in Orlando where it is HOT and HUMID in the summer!! I loved the idea of my little hot rod, but during this summer I was beginning – no actually I truly HATED driving it!!!!!!!!!! There came a time one afternoon after taxiing our 2 daughters to gymnastics that I called him and had him meet me so that we could change cars because I was soooooo hot you could have wrung my clothes out!!!!!!!!!!!! At that point I told him to spend however many zeroes it would take to make the A.C. blow lots of cold air. And as any good husband would do, he listened and – ta da – Mr. Ice Project was installed in my little hot rod! Now I drive all over Orlando in my (really now) COOL/FRIGID little red 911. Yes I even take the top off and still blow that COLD A.C.!! It’s a BEAUTIFUL thing!!!!!!!!!! I highly recommend the Mr. Ice Project to anyone who is suffering from melting in their hot 911!! Thank you! Thank You!! A cool and happy customer in Orlando!! (Now is there anything that you have to prevent Hurricanes from invading the Orlando area!?!?!)”
F.E., Sarasota, FL 1983, 911, SC Installed Kuehl rear fender condenser, Kuehl Serpentine evaporator, Kuehl 507 Compressor, Kuehl barrier hose set with Kuehl pressure switch, Kuehl drier, and Kuehl Vent, running R134a.
“Your kit was complete and your instructions were clear. I enjoyed taking time to think about how each component worked, and how to make fit and function optimal. However, I didn’t vary from your recommendations on anything. Yesterday, I had a shop evacuate and charge the system. I wanted them to take the same care and attention to detail you specify in your instructions. He did follow the instructions for a 3-hour evacuation after reaching max vacuum, and did a 1-hour leak test. Everything held tight. He weighed the charge and followed your instructions for engine and fan speeds. He started with 24 oz and the temp from the Kuehl vent was in the low 40s. Pressures were low, but I didn’t have the opportunity to note them as he added refrigerant. I saw 31.6 degrees from the Kuehl vent when he was at 30 oz. The expansion valve was icing at the low fan speed. It cleared up at high speed. I thought he could evacuate refrigerant if needed and agreed to let him add 2 more oz, for a total of 32 oz. At that charge the low side pressure was only 18 psi and the high side was 220 psi. At idle and low blower speed, my vent temp was 38.8 degrees. Actually, I am happy with temps in the 30 degrees. The ambient temperature was 83 degrees with 93% humidity. The day was cloudy. I’m waiting for a normal Florida summer day with full sun and temps in the 90s to see how well the system handles massive heat. On the road, my temps dropped into the low 30s (32.8 degrees) on low fan speed and at 40 MPH. My temp goes up to the low 40s when stopped in traffic, and varies while driving, based on fan speed and road speed. My temp sensing switch works well, cutting out the compressor at various temperatures when I back off the full cold setting. Now I understand why you are reluctant to specify what temps customers can expect. There are too many variables to guarantee anything. But, I’m very happy with the upgrades I installed and the results I achieved. While I still don’t know how the system will handle the most challenging Florida conditions, once the system evacuates heat and humidity from the cockpit, the vents blow colder than on my Impala, and the cockpit feels very cool, dry and comfortable.”
Followup on 5/26/2010 – Client had a problem with the system and followed our evacuation and charging procedure:
“We all agreed that the most likely culprit was the dryer. Rather than play around trying to chase other problems, I asked Frank to install a new dryer after he evacuated the system. He then followed your procedures for eliminating any contamination and then re-charged my system with 39oz of r134a. My system checked out fine in the shop, with good cooling at the evaporator and at the vents. On the road back to Sarasota, for about 1 hour, the system performed better than ever before. I was able to set the thermostat to easily cycle the compressor for internal evaporator temps between 29 and 53 degrees. That was achieved with the thermostat knob at about the half-way point. The day was cloudless and fairly hot (90 degrees), but with relatively low humidity. My evaporator never froze, although I’m sure I could have frozen it with lower thermostat settings. The cockpit air was comfortably cool at quiet fan speeds. So, it looks like my problem is solved. I appreciate your continued support.”
D.W.V., Sydney, Australia, temps 100+F ! 1985, 911 Installed Kuehl rear fender condenser, Kuehl barrier hose set with Kuehl pressure switch, running R134a.
“I have completed the installation now of your barrier hoses, Kuehl rear fender condenser, and wiring. We had a workshop pump down the system, leak tested, and charged it. Something went slightly wrong as he said it stopped charging at about 550 gm of R134a (19 oz.). I had to drive from Sydney to Coffs Harbour up the east coast, about 575 km (357 miles) each way and the system worked well. It was hot outside, 35-37 deg. C (95-99 deg. F) along the way and the sun’s radiation was so hot that I couldn’t rest my hand on the passenger seat leather. It wasn’t cold in the car, but comfortable, with cold air blowing on me, and the humidity taken care of. Since then we’ve re-charged the car, with more time. We put in 725 gm (as you had found 26 oz. good for this number of condensers) and played around a bit up and down. No leaks, and it is working well. Makes a tremendous difference, and I am now driving my car to work each day. Thanks for your interest, and I shall be advising anyone local who wants to seriously fix their old A/C, to contact you.”
Followup:
” Greetings from Sydney, Australia. It is now 12 months since we gassed up the “new” air conditioning in the 911, and it has been working perfectly. It is my daily driver, and lately has been coping with ambient temperatures around 38 degrees C (100F) when I visit sites in my consulting work. The old system would never have worked as well, and would have leaked out most of the refrigerant in that time. The new barrier hoses and extra condenser are life-savers; the car is now so enjoyable. Merry Christmas.

“First off thanks for all of your help. It’s done and charged with R-12 and blowing really coooold. It has been over 100 degrees and get in turn the AC on and it is blowing cold after driving 100 feet, takes a little longer for the inside to get cold (Az weather) but not very long. The install was just a little harder than I first thought but , not that bad. I was doing it inside a garage in the middle of July in Phx. Az. so it took longer then I had planed . Yes, there is all of 40 foot of hose under the 911.” UPDATE “It was 114 F outside the other day. I left the car to sit out there for the most of the day so it was pretty heat soaked. I got in it and drove down the road, not far, and it was blowin ice cold air like crazy and plenty of it too”.

” I would like to thank the folks at Griffiths for providing me with the means to finally get my 911sc air conditioning system to function properly. I can now cruise around in the summer with my windows up and in complete comfort even on the warmest California days. That is something that I was never able to do before. The installation would have been much more difficult if not for the detailed instructions and illustrations provided with my parts. You can understand this considering that I am a serious “do it yourselfer”. Seldom when ordering parts do you find this level of customer service as was provided to me. Example; my technician talking to Griffiths on a question during the evacuation and charging phase concerning the type and quantity of oil to be used. He (the tech) even made a comment “who are these guys”, it was difficult for him to believe that I would be able to call on my cell while at his facility, and get someone on the phone instead of a recording that knew exactly what they were talking about, and was familiar with what I had installed on my car. I can not began to thank you for everything you did for me by providing quality parts that fit and the information I needed to make it all work.” W.M. got lucky when he called us, we were not on the links golfing that day!

“At idle with the rear lid up, it was blowing 28 degree’s. At speed with the lid down and the rear condenser working, it gets “””really””” cold inside the car. Well worth the expense and my time to install everything, besides, I got a real lesson in how AC works.”

” I just wanted to give you a update on my Project ice in the real world. I am back from my two week trip to California. I ended up driving over 4,000 miles total. I have found that if the outside temp is in the 90s the vent temp is about 40 degrees which is nice and cold. Once it gets to 110 to 115 the vent temp is about 50 degrees. Not to bad but it was no ice machine under those extreams. I suspect most vehicles struggle with that heat load. If the temp is below 90 I can get 36 to 38 degree vent temp. I can’t prove it but I suspect the condensers in the fender helps keep the heat from dumping into the engine. Even running 75 to 85 MPH in 110 degree heat the engine temp never went above 220. I know I was a lot hotter before the Project ice and I remember the engine temp was hotter under the extreame heat outside. The climb up the mountains to Flagstaff to Phoneix in 115 degree heat is a big strain on a cooling system. My 911 Carrera had no problems. I turned 123456 miles on the trip home. I have several people ask about the system. I told them it was money well spent. Now I do not hesitate to take it out on a HOT day. Thanks for a great system! ”

” It was another very warm afternoon in Northern Nevada, the difference today was that I was driving across the desert freezing! I finally got my system charged and what a spectacular result!! Your products work beyond belief!! I had to point the Kuehl vents away from me as you can bet I was not going to turn the AC off…I also received some favorable comments from the AC mechanics who are used to working with traditional Porsche units. I believe they were impressed too. On a side note, I must once again compliment you on your customer service. In today’s world it is becoming more and more unusual to encounter an organization that is willing to back up their products with such exceptional service. I think we have shared more than two dozen emails and multiple phone conversations. This proved to be an extremely involved project for me and through it all, you were there to offer advice and encouragement. It was greatly appreciated and an accomplishment for me to be proud of! Once again, thank you for everything and feel free to use this note as further testimonial to your products.”

“I thought you should be the first to know; the a/c freezes me out of the car. It is the first pre 964 Porsche I have ever been in with air conditioning that actually blows cold air. It makes the car a real daily driver, no matter what the weather, which is still 90+ here. Thanks for your great service; as you know, I had many questions before committing to buy (and after). You went beyond the call of duty by patiently answering all of my questions. I will recommend you to anyone with an early Porsche looking to improve their a/c. Customer followup 7/5/2010… I bought my duehl kuehl system from you in April of ’09. Although we are having a very hot summer, I have been able to enjoy my car as it is always cool. I wrote an article about my experience with Griffith’s Technical in our local PCA newsletter.

Still working great as I start my second summer. One drawback…hard to see out the rear window due to the condensation because it’s so frickin cold and dry in my car…”.
An awesome day driving through the Black Forest (car is in Germany now) on one of the hottest days this summer…temps hovering in the high 90s and the first time I’ve been out in the afternoon driving in such temps since last summer here in Germany. My Kuehl A/C was rocking! Running the system in my ’88 Cab kept us cool and dry during spirited driving in the Forest. I ran the system at about 85% cold setting and about 95% fan setting. (I have the variable fan controller and Hurricane fan and like a lot of air blowing on me.) Vent temps varied between about 35 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit as the compressor would cycle on and off. I have the dual Kuehl condensers in the LR wheel well. Installed in 2008. Interior temps ran between 75-77F all day. I realized at the end of the day that I did not have the vent lever on the heater/vent panel closed so 95+ outside air was coming in the cabin all day so I’m sure the cabin temps would have been a little lower if I had closed the vent. Engine oil temp hovered about 205F all day. “
Customer followup 11/2012:“No freon leaks. Drove through Texas last summer at 102 outside and it was in the high 60s/low 70s in the car on the highway. Added on the hurricane evap blower fan and that was essential. Have lived in south Florida, Hawaii, and southern Virginia with the system”
Customer Rennlist Forum post 7/2018: “Griff’s for 10 years in an 88 Cab. Works perfectly. Plenty cold in the cabin. Lived in south Florida, southern Alabama, southern Germany, and Hawaii with excursions into 100+ in Texas. Excellent customer support and quality equipment. It was in the mid-90’s in Alabama last week and after being parked 8 hours in the hot sun with a dark blue interior, the cabin cooled down within 10 minutes and was a comfortable drive for the next 20 minutes in stop and go traffic in town with oil temps at the first narrow mark (90C). “

” Griff, I just want to tell ya, I’ve been working on cars for many years and your kit is great. I’m super happy with the results: here in Miami, mid 90’s with humidity and I’m gettng 40 degrees at the vent. You did a great job with the design.”.

“How has it performed? In one word — it’s COLD! I think you nailed it. We have been through two hot humid summers in Boston since your upgrade. The air temp at the center dashboard vent always runs 38–40F degrees with the thermostat on coldest setting and the fan at ~1/3 speed. I can feel the compressor cycle on & off so I know the a/c is still loafing and has spare capacity. Driving doesn’t get any better than that! Also, the new alternator & voltage regulator you installed, and the replacement high pressure fuel line, are both A-OK.”.

“I got my car back from my mechanic today. He put in a completely new Dual-Kuel system. In case you’re wondering, yes, it’s worth every penny. I measured the A/C vent air, the weather was 110 degrees and sunny. You can put me down as a big time supporter of Kuehl. Absolutely the best of quality and workmanship, I now have 4 condensers, 3 fans 7 vigorously blowing vents because of the Kuehl Hurricane fan. The performance and comfort both are top notch. I was cruising at 110 degrees sunshine, with a 34 degree air vent temps, on the highway. We’ll see next how it performs on a long jaunt through the desert at these same type of temperatures.degrees. and then the real test, 120 degrees sometime between early and late JUly. During the day, the car sits on asphalt, and although I use a good widow visor, as well as tinted windows. Even so, it’s going to be a little toasty at5 pm. If this system can cool under those conditions, it will be a work of mechanical art. I will repost as milestones are achieved. In the meantime if you want to enjoy your 911 year round in the Sun Belt, cut loose with is really not that much money and have him work a system up for you. The kit totally transforms Porsche 911s enjoyment even in a desert summer Heaven as an AZ winter Stay Cool!”

“I am happy to report your a/c system performs better (colder) than you said it would. There have been no issues or failures with any of the components either on installation or in use. I wish I had done this conversion years ago. By comparison, the factory a/c is pathetic. It makes an older 911 a true year round enjoyable San Diego experience. No more sweltering summers. No more leaving the car home on nice days just because it’s hot out. No more freeway driving with the top and/or windows down getting blasted by freeway noise and heat trying in vain to stay cool. No more having to go alone because the wife – girlfriend – will no longer tolerate a sweaty, sun burn miserable ride. Expensive? You won’t think so after your first summer. I was also pleased with and would recommend the installer. Again, no issues – no failures. So, if you want to enjoy your Porsche on a run up to the Mission at San Juan Capistrano, or a blast along the Ortega Hwy. or (my favorite) the Sunrise Hwy. to Julian, in serenity and comfort with a grin on your mug – this is the ticket.”

“It would be interesting to know, but I believe I have the only 1985 Ruf Carrera with a Kuehl System and it works! Man it works well in my opinion and I am very happy to have purchased the system from you. Temperature setttled nicely at 39DegF with 30% fan speed in 100DegF with 50% humidity – in my books a stunning result. Does me just fine for the heat we have here on an especially hot day.”

“Picked up the car around noon today 88F (+31 C), and daringly adjusted the fan and thermostat, within just a short distance of driving, the new system was blowing ICE cold air into the cabin – unbelievable, that after an unknown number of years of no functional AC, it’s been resurrected and I am TOTALLY impressed. Thanks Griff for your exceptional product and assistance in answering my questions during my install. I had a lot ot reticence when I started a few short weeks ago, but… JOB DONE! “

“Hi Griff,
Got the Ice system in my 1987 911 Cab – glad I have it as it has been 104 to 108 the last week – at 108 I need to run it full blast but is holding its own – finding the temperature for the engine is a bit higher due to the extra work but just a hair higher.
Now I can drive it in the summer !
Great product and thank you for all of your help !

The Mr. Ice project was a complete success. Both the folks at RPM Performance in Lorton VA — Stan Fox and his son Kevin — and I were just astounded at how well the new systems works, both in terms of air temp and volume. Thanks! “

“Hi Charlie,
I picked up my 1984 911 (blk/blk) with the new AC on Monday July 3rd. The weather forecast for today, Friday the 6th was for EXTREMELY Hot weather. Afternoon temps in Brea hit 113 and 116 about 15 miles away over the hills and into the valley. This was a very good day for an extensive drive and an “shakedown” of all the new components. I tested in city, country and freeway driving. The only heat that I felt was coming thru the HOT glass and at full blast still gave out cool air which kept the inside comfortable. My tech said that this was the coldest 911 AC that he had ever felt.”
Update: “Hi Charlie –
I was just reading an article about the excessive heat in California. Chino,CA peaked at 120* ( Friday, July 6, 2018 ) which is next to Chino Hills that was at 116* (BMW drivers car gauge) at a stop light. The actual outside temperature that my 1984 (blk/blk) 911 Carrera was in might have been up to 4* higher than I initially thought. My hugely upgraded GRIFFITHS AC over the factory original is a level of performance that I did not expect. You may want to add this endorsement to my existing one. Thank You Again !!!

“My shop did the evacuate, charge and test and they said it was the COLDEST 911 Carrera they ever saw. In their shop it was 100F, at idle vent temp was 38F. Driving on the road it was 115F and vent temp was 35F !“

“It has been several years since my “Mr. Ice project”. 83 SC, took everything out and replaced with two fender mounted condensers, front condenser, Kuehl evaporator with expansion valve, condenser dehydrator, new hoses and thermostat control and Kuehl compressor. The engine lid condenser was removed and pressure tested, cleaned and re-installed with everything else. The installation was done following the instructions. No problem. Now years later, the car is cold as your want, dry, and dependable. Even in Sacramento Valley heat, the car is a joy to drive. Thanks for the support. You are always willing to listen and offer a solution.“

“In true Griffiths Technical Inc. tradition, the A/C kit is amazingly complete… no trips to the hardware store. The directions were complete and accurate in every way. When it was completed the system blended in perfectly with our 911 – nothing looked like an add-on. We’re pleased to report we can acutually drive the car in complete comfort for the first time. Literally, ice cold air was pouring from the vents. We’ve been able to maintain comfortable temperatures with the fan on medium and, on warm Florida nights, it actually gets too cold! So we have to turn the thermostat on the A/C controller up – something we’ve never done before! Best of all our 911 Carrera Cabrio is finally an all-weather car with truly ice-cold air-conditioning!”
